In December 2025, I had the pleasure of talking to a man who has made something of a career out of explaining Poland’s economic success to the world: Marcin Piątkowski, economist, World Bank adviser and author of Europe’s Growth Champion and Złoty Wiek (The Golden Age).

We talked about:

  • Why Poland may be living through its economic “Golden Age” and what drove three decades of extraordinary growth.

  • The demographic crunch ahead, with millions of workers set to leave the labor market, and whether migration and higher employment can fill the gap.

  • Why AI and automation could be particularly important for Poland, helping compensate for labor shortages while giving the country another opportunity to leapfrog Western Europe technologically.

  • How Poland should sell itself to global investors, and why Piątkowski believes it could become the new industrial heart of the West.
